Objective
The objective is to observe an increasing number of users consistently engaging with the Olive platform, utilizing its features to monitor health, gather information, and successfully achieve their well-being goals. The aim is to provide a seamless and effective tool that becomes an integral part of users' daily routines for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
User Research
For user research, a face-to-face online interview and survey lasting approximately 15 minutes was conducted.
Research Goals
-
Explore and comprehend motivations for adopting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
-
Gain insights into challenges users encounter on their journey to a healthy lifestyle.
-
Investigate the resources and methods users employ in pursuing a healthy lifestyle.
-
Understand users' perspectives and aspirations regarding a healthy lifestyle.
User Interview
Conducting user interviews was a pivotal step, offering the chance to engage with users individually and gain insights into their experiences. This direct interaction fostered empathy, providing a profound understanding of their needs, desires, and challenges. The interviews not only helped uncover needs that might have been overlooked but also contributed to the development of distinctive features that set the app apart. Through open-ended questions and candid conversations, I could reveal unspoken needs that other methods might miss. This direct line of communication proved invaluable in clarifying requirements, understanding feedback, and ensuring that design decisions were well-informed and user-centric.

Surveys
Surveys were structured from a diverse group and multiple participants, allowing me to collect consistent feedback by ensuring each participant was presented with the same set of questions in the same format. Feedback regarding the needed features could enable the features of the Olive application to develop and become specific. It allowed me to structure factors such as age, occupation, and get to know my audience by giving me the opportunity to compare responses between different demographic groups and geographical regions. Participants generally felt more comfortable in an anonymous survey environment and gave honest feedback. The information I received from people with food addiction problems was especially useful to me.

Usability Test Report
Participants generally navigated the pages without major issues, but faced challenges due to a lack of information,
not knowing the next steps. Specific observations include:
-
Users experienced difficulty initiating tasks promptly, desiring clearer instructions.
-
The goal creation page was perceived as cramped and visually confusing, suggesting the need for improved element separation and a step-by-step process.
-
The conclusion of the quitting smoking task left users unclear about the next steps, indicating potential improvements in user guidance.
-
Users suggested directing them to the dashboard after goal creation for better clarity.
-
The filter icon on the recipes page was challenging to notice, indicating a need for improved visibility.
-
Some users found the messaging and notification icons in the Resources section unnoticeable or incomprehensible, emphasizing the importance of more descriptive titles and information.
-
Consider presenting icons with accompanying text initially, allowing them to be used alone in subsequent iterations.
-
There was consensus that the tester function felt more like part of the targets section, suggesting a reconsideration of its placement for improved clarity.

Design Collabration
The changes I made in the design as a result of the evaluations I requested with my colleagues.
Exercise Routine Creating
Before

In the previous design, users initially chose the number of weeks for their goal, selected exercise days, picked exercise times from a time picker, and then selected a workout video from the exercise page.

In the new version, users specify exercise days and durations first. In the next step, they can mark each exercise day and optionally add a video. They do not have to choose a video, they can also add their own sports to their exercise routine.

After
Home Page
I also updated my home page to align with the changes I made on the exercise creation page.
-
Titles and texts aligned to the left for enhanced readability.
-
Programs and exercises visually supported and accessible from the home page.
-
Users can directly play exercise videos and connect with other devices if desired.

UI Design Principles
Emotional Design for User Engagements
Rewarding Interaction
Users create weekly profile photos reflecting progress toward personal goals, featuring animal figures symbolizing achievements. For example, someone quitting smoking may start with a fish image, progressing to a dolphin or loggerhead caretta, representing improved lung health. This approach provides benefits like visual progress representation, personalized motivation, positive reinforcement, increased health awareness, a sense of achievement, potential community building, and fun in goal-setting. The feature aims to enhance the user experience and foster a supportive community environment.
Developing Personality
Developing a health app acknowledges the personal and sensitive nature of health journeys, where users may feel judged or conceal emotions about their appearance and past setbacks. Recognizing the gradual nature of transformations, like muscle development and weight loss, I plan to offer ongoing motivation through medical references and real success stories. Illustrating tangible changes aims to boost user confidence and empower them to persevere in their health journey.
In studying design principles, I chose the theme of stones for my application to convey the message of balance in both body and life. The goal is to highlight that users can achieve their goals by visualizing their journeys with the application, metaphorically paving their way step by step, and finding balance.
Ton of Voice
The Olive app is dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle by encouraging individuals to achieve a balanced and fit body. It offers users a systematic approach to creating step-by-step routines and finding rhythm in their daily lives. Expert advice and factual information are provided to guide users on their journey. “It emphasizes that progress is a collaborative effort between user and app, with clear recognition that the app does not promise miracles.”
Copy/Language Guide lines
The language used in practice should be friendly but serious, avoiding playfulness. The aim is to consistently motivate and encourage users at every step, instilling belief in the realistic and effective nature of the content. Exercise videos should use empathetic language and avoid exaggerated, muscular figures. The images to be used for questions should be selected from sympathetic animal images, thus preventing users from becoming demoralized. Reminders should highlight tangible results that users may not immediately feel during the process.
Conclusion
What I learned:
-
Adopted a sensitive and non-judgmental approach in health and appearance interviews to create a safe and balanced dialogue.
-
Focused on determining essential features and sifting through ideas in a content-rich environment.
-
Embraced the principle of designing for the user's needs, leading to the elimination of personal preferences to prioritize simplicity and ease of use in the application.
Challenges
Understanding the competitive landscape of the health app market presented a challenge, given the abundance of successful applications. Through user interviews, a key insight emerged: many individuals grappled with maintaining order, leading to a thoughtful solution—introducing the concept of creating a routine. Recognizing that people often struggle to perceive immediate rewards for their efforts, the idea evolved to share real-time information about the positive changes already underway in their bodies. This strategic approach aims to address user challenges and provide timely motivation for sustained engagement.
Plans for future
Primarily, our focus is on establishing a community within the app, driven by user feedback. The goal is to cultivate a motivational platform where individuals with shared or similar objectives can connect and potentially participate in challenges together.
